Dessein et al 2001 Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal underactivity has been reported in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Insulin resistance was estimated by the homeostasis-model assessment (HOMAIR) & controlled in this study. This study found low DHEAS (dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate) concentrations in IA. The role of hypoadrenalism in the pathophysiology of IA (inflammatory arthritis) deserves further elucidation. DHEA replacement may be indicated in many patients with IA.
